This is the first in my Splurge or Save series, in which I will be comparing some higher-end beauty products to their drugstore alternatives. I do love a good drugstore dupe and am always so excited when I find a more economical version of a beauty product that I love. Today I will be comparing two very similar lip products that are both close to my heart: MAC’s Matte Lipstick in the shade Mehr and Revlon’s Colorbust Matte Balm in shade #225 Sultry. Let’s see how they measure up!
Price and Value
First things first, let’s talk about price. At around $11 (depending on where you shop), the Revlon Matte Balms are about half the price of MAC lipsticks, which run for $21. In terms of actual value, you’re paying just over $4 a gram for Revlon (2.7g each), versus $7 a gram for the MAC product (3g each). In my opinion that is a pretty substantial price decrease for a very comparable product.
Colour and Formula
Both are highly pigmented and the colour match is almost exact, with Mehr being ever-so-slightly on the cooler side compared to Sultry. Both go on very smoothly with or without the use of a lipliner, however the MAC lipstick is slightly easier to apply due to its more shape.
I find the Revlon formula actually dries my lips out more than MAC’s, which is odd since the Revlon product is a ‘balm’ which you think would be more moisturizing. However, I also find that Revlon’s Matte Balm does not wear off or transfer as easily as MAC Matte Lipsticks. With the MAC product, I will almost always wear a lipliner underneath to help it wear off more naturally throughout the day. I find that the Revlon Matte Balm does not need a lipliner and stays put on its own, so I get some additional savings there.
The last thing I will comment on is the scent because I know for some people that can be a major deal-breaker! Revlon’s Matte Balms do have a pretty strong minty scent, so if you’re not into that, the more neutral, slightly vanilla scent of MAC Lipsticks might sway you in that direction.
Overall, the Revlon Matte Balm is a great, bank-account-friendly alternative to the MAC Matte Lipstick. I find that I’m wearing these interchangeably in my daily makeup routine, so I personally see no reason to splurge on the MAC product. And I don’t mind the minty scent, so in the end, the Revlon Matte Balm wins out in my books. (I am also a huge fan of the shade #250 Standout in the Matte Balm; it is one of my go-to statement reds. So if you do like the formula and are looking for a very long-lasting, cool-toned matte red, I’d definitely recommend checking that one out.)
That is it from me today! I hope you enjoyed reading this post and don’t forget to let me know what you think of these products in the comments below.
Until next time!
