I’m back with another Splurge or Save post, and this time we’re talking about blending brushes. A good blending brush is an absolute must-have tool in my makeup routine in my opinion. Often, it’s the only brush I reach for when doing an eye look. Chances are if you’ve already got one of these in your makeup drawer, it is the well-known MAC 217 Blending Brush. However, if you don’t have one, I’ve found a seriously good drugstore dupe for you to consider instead. Oh, and the best part? It’s less than half the price!
The one I’m talking about is by a brand called True Fiction Cosmetics and it is their Pro Blend B205 brush. I happened across this brand in Save On Foods (random, I know), which so far is the only place I’ve seen it available aside from online. The brush completely caught my eye because it’s such an obvious dupe for the MAC 217. The brushes look almost completely identical. At the time I’d had my trusty 217 for a while and totally loved it, so when I saw this I thought I might as well pick it up so I could have another clean brush handy (this was before my minimalist days!) I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the brush and have actually ended up liking and using it more than the one from MAC.
The first difference I noticed between the two brushes is that the bristles of the B205 are the slightest bit more stiff than the 217, which are a little bit softer. When it comes to blending out eyeshadows, having softer fibres might seem like the better bet. However I find that the B205 still achieves the same look but in a shorter amount of time because the bristles are stronger (if that makes sense). So I’m able to apply my shadows and blend them out more quickly, whereas with the 2017 I could be sitting there for a while trying to get the product to move and blend.
Aside from that, I love that the B205 is made from cruelty-free goat hair. Looking at the description on MAC’s website, I can’t tell what the actual fibres are made from. However, I do know that MAC is not on PETA’s list of approved brands, so from that angle alone I’ve stopped purchasing from them entirely (though I’ll still use up the products I’ve purchased in the past). Whereas, True Fiction’s first commitment listed on their website is to create cruelty-free beauty products. And obviously, the price of the True Fiction brush is $13 compared to $30 at MAC, so we know who gets the point on affordability!
To be as fair as possible, I’ll list two downsides that I do see to purchasing the B250. The first is that True Fiction seems to be limited with where they’re currently selling – as I mentioned I’ve only been able to find them at Save On Foods. Their company is based here in Vancouver, Canada so I’m not sure where else it’s available. However, I think the fact that they sell online totally gets around this and I don’t really see it as much of a con.
The only other thing I will mention is that the price tag they put on the brush left a sticky residue on the handle when I pulled it off, which is one of my biggest pet peeves! But in the grand scheme of things, that really doesn’t have much of an impact at all on how much I like and use it.
Aside from the brush itself, I should mention that I’ve tried some other True Fiction products and really like them as well, especially the Matte Lipstick (Never Naked is the perfect nude pink shade!) It just goes to show that you really don’t need to spend your money on expensive products to get basically the same thing. Saving my money and being more mindful about my purchases are both things I’m trying to focus on for a happier, simpler life – so anything I can find to help me do that, I’m all for.
Save!!! At the end of the day, this one is a no-brainer for me. I would pick the Pro Blend B205 hands-down over the more expensive 217, especially considering it’s less than half the price. Have you tried it or any other True Fiction products? Have you found another amazing dupe for the 217 as well? Let me know in the comments below!
Until next time,
