Welcome back to another blog post!

Today I’m sharing the best DIY recipe to lighten your hair naturally. It’s simple and easy to make, and all of the ingredients can be found in your kitchen cupboard! I’m a huge fan of this for a few reasons: not only is it inexpensive, but it won’t damage your hair nearly as much as the chemicals from the salon will. The highlights you’ll get will also look more natural, giving you the perfect sunkissed locks. If you want the full recipe, just keep reading!

How to lighten your hair naturally

What you’ll need

  • 2 cups of strong chamomile tea

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut or olive oil
  • Juice of 3 lemons

Instructions

Boil 2 cups of water and steep the chamomile tea for at least 5 minutes. The longer you steep it and the stronger the tea is, the better. You can also use multiple teabags.

While the tea is steeping, combine the honey, cinnamon, and oil. Stir the mixture together well and let it sit for an hour or longer to ‘develop’.

Once your ingredients are ready, combine them in a spray bottle and add the lemon juice. It might get a little bit clumpy, but just give it a good shake before you use it.

You can spray this all over your hair and head out in the sun or leave it on as a mask overnight. Because it’s so gentle, you can use it regularly (a few times a week) until you get the results you’re looking for.

My hair is naturally a dark ash-blonde, and this combination adds the perfect highlights that give it more dimension and brightness.

How it works

Chamomile tea – A key ingredient of chamomile flowers is apigenin, which has been used traditionally as a lightening agent. It can also stimulate the blood vessels and encourage hair growth, which makes it especially great for this recipe.

Honey & Cinnamon – Honey contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. When mixed with cinnamon, it will ‘develop’ and increase the lightening properties of the honey. Honey is also a natural humectant which will keep your hair moisturized.

Lemon juice – The citric acid in lemon juice will accelerate the brightening process, especially under the sun.

Oil – Using coconut or olive oil will help keep your hair moisturized throughout the process. Olive oil especially will help release the hydrogen peroxide agents found in honey.

I absolutely love using this mixture in the summer. Not only will the sun activate the ingredients and help it work, but it adds so much texture and volume to your hair, giving you the perfect beach waves. It rinses off easily in the shower and will leave your hair even smoother and shinier than before.

Give it a try and let me know how it works in the comments below!

With love,
